On the morning of 5 October 2011 the Liberian-registered cargo ship Rena ran on to the Astrolabe reef, about 22km out of the Port of Tauranga, near Motiti Island. This wiki page provides links to resources about the resulting oil spill and damage to Western Bay of Plenty beaches, and to resources on the study of and rehabilitation from previous oil spills. Its form and content will change as the salvage operation proceeds, since this page was first made while oil was still being pumped from the ship, the contents of fallen containers being cleared from the coast and shipping lanes, and oil and oiled wildlife being collected from the beaches.

These are useful subject headings:
Rena (Ship)
Oil spills -- Environmental aspects -- New Zealand -- Bay of Plenty (Region).
