One of the most often recounted stories of the Land Wars of the 1860s is that of the battle of Gate Pa. It has captured the public imagination for two reasons: because of the resounding defeat of trained British soldiers by a small number of Maori warriors, and because of the honourable conduct of Maori towards the dead and wounded soldiers.

This is a useful subject heading:

Who gave water after the Battle of Gate Pa?
Battle of Gate Pā 1864: Who gave water to the wounded?
We often have requests about who gave water to Col Booth at the Battle of Gate Pa. Stories vary. Depending on the source and its' reliability, several different people are credited with the compassionate action. Here is a reliable observation from Christine Clement, writing in Tauranga Memories. Paragraph beginning with "Jane Foley was said to have helped in the building and defending of Gate Pa…" (Near the bottom of the page)
