In 1856 Queen Victoria created the Victoria Cross (VC) in order to recognise acts of gallantry in the presence of the enemy by members of the armed forces, regardless of rank. Corporal Willie Apiata was awarded the Victoria Cross in July 2007 for displaying the highest order of courage under fire. He joins such names as Charles Upham, Second Lieutenant Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, Bernard Lord Freyberg, and Sir Keith Elliot.
